"Untitled at Sea"
Colored Pencil/Graphite

1992 - 18 x 24
personal collection

The first five pieces integrated colored pencil and graphite. For this piece I began with a graphite under-drawing and then "tinted" it with colored pencil.
"The Girl
in the Fancy Frame"
Colored Pencil/Graphite

1993 - 19 x 24
 Jack and Lisa Grisbrook collection

This piece was drawn first with colored pencil and then the ribbons of the fancy frame and the girls face were overlaid with graphite to define the subtle shadows.
"Dreaming Mask I"
Colored Pencil/Graphite

1994 - 14 x 17
available for purchase

The first three "Dreaming Masks" utilized graphite as a substitute for black and also used graphite to accentuate the shadow of the solid colored pencil areas.

"Suspended"
Colored Pencil
on Black Illustration Board
2006 - 14 x 19
available for purchase

The vertical reflections of the background trees in the calm water contrasted with the horizontally moving waves of the wind disturbed water was quite intriguing for me. The vertical shafts of green reflect the grassy slopes beyond and the horizontal waves reflect the pale blue sky and the pink clouds of evening.  And the ducks all seem to be suspended in bliss.
"At the End of the Day"
Colored Pencil
on Grey Illustration Board
2006 - 14 x 19
available for purchase

I wanted to render a believable image of the bright sparkling water in the early evening. With the sun to the upper right, the brightness of the watery field diminishes toward the lower left. The trees and the grassy foreground frame the piece and the alert mother and her babies defines the end of the day.
"Self Portrait III"
Colored Pencil
on Black Illustration Board
2006 - 19 x 14
available for purchase

I took this picture of myself  next to the window and a hanging plant. The blue hat just pops next to the warm green of the plant. My face, my neck, and my shoulder serve as a transition into the black background.

"Sublimation"
Colored Pencil
2006 - 14 x 19
available for purchase

I had been experimenting with a long, narrow block of sheets, hanging from above, and where each sheet is cut on the bottom so as to create a cylindrical ceiling. Differently coloring each side of every sheet suggested some type of chromic emanation directed upward in an ordered fashion. This suggested order emanating from chaos; hence, the chaotic, leaping, and swirling color field below where the jagged edges of the shapes echo the cut sheets above. To breach the black gap between them requires sublimation.
"So Forth in Sunlight"
Colored Pencil
on Black Illustration Board
2007 - 13 x 18
available for purchase

The only thing I can say about this piece is that it was an absolute joy to execute. So Forth was a really cool cat. The picture says everything else.
