"Monorail Robot"
Graphite

1994 - 18" x 24"
personal collection

While experimenting with a Spirograph set, I developed a set of mechanical irises for a robot's eyes. Then it was just a matter of using my drafting board experience to add a body.

"Sublimation"
Colored Pencil
2006 - 14 x 19
personal collection

I had been experimenting with a long, narrow block of sheets, hanging from above, and where each sheet is cut on the bottom so as to create a cylindrical ceiling. Differently coloring each side of every sheet suggested some type of chromic emanation directed upward in an ordered fashion. This suggested order emanating from chaos; hence, the chaotic, leaping, and swirling color field below where the jagged edges of the shapes echo the cut sheets above. To breach the black gap between them requires sublimation.

The first three "Dreaming Masks" utilized graphite as a substitute for black and also used graphite to accentuate the shadow of the solid colored pencil areas.

"Awareness and Tension"
Pen & Colored India Ink
1997 20 x 26
Matt Marxer collection

Another example of a willful expansion using pen & colored inks.

This image has been completely reinvented as "Dreaming Mask 4". Although the new piece is not yet finished, you can see it in the "Current Projects, ..." portfolio.

"Ejecta & The Effervescent Joy"
Pen & India Ink
1997 20 x 26
Adam Hastings collection

This is where mindless doodles become willful expansions. To me, abstractions and experimentals are the freest of expression and quite stimulating.
"Untitled"
Ball Point Pen

Personal Collection

This piece, done in ball-point pen, was done long ago when I was 22. When my grandmother saw it she asked me for it and displayed it under the glass of her coffee table in her front room.
